Hawaii Island’s Geothermal Potential

The potential of geothermal resources in areas outside of Lower Puna made the news recently, with the report presented to the Hawaiian Homes Commission. The report by the Geothermal Permitted Interaction Group mentions Maunakea and Kawaihae as promising locations for geothermal energy generation.

With this report, the Permitted Interaction Group raises attention to the potential to expand geothermal energy production in Hawai‘i further. Importantly, this potential development is on Hawaiian Home Lands. Royalties from any development would benefit the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands.

It has long been known that additional “hot spots,” locations with access to geothermal heat, exist across Hawaii. Earlier explorations by the Hawai‘i Groundwater and Geothermal Resources Center (HGGRC) revealed areas with promising access to heat and water, resources that can be used to generate sustainable electricity.
